San Blas Panama

Guna Yala is an indigenous territory governed by the Guna indigenous group. The territory consists of a narrow strip of land on the Caribbean side of the country, as well as an archipelago of 365 islands, of which only 49 are inhabited by Guna people. The islands in Guna Yala are also known as the San Blas Islands, which are considered a top destination in Panama due to their well-protected natural beauty and the native Guna people.

The Gunas are known for crafting the famous Molas, a traditional textile made from layers of colored fabric crafted to form patterns and pictures inspired by their cosmogenic beliefs. The molas, which recreate the Guna vision of a colorful and mythological world, make incredible, one-of-a-kind souvenirs.

Location and Map

There are two primary ways to get to the San Blas Islands from Panama City: by a combination of flight and boat, or by a 4x4 vehicle and boat. A direct driving route is not possible, as the islands are only accessible by sea or air.

The most popular option is to travel by land. This trip involves a ride in a 4x4 vehicle from Panama City to the port of Cartí, followed by a boat transfer to one of the islands. The drive to the port takes approximately 2.5 to 4 hours, with the subsequent boat ride lasting 30 to 45 minutes. It's important to know that the road to Cartí is notoriously steep, bumpy, and winding. For safety reasons, Guna Yala authorities at the checkpoint only permit 4x4 vehicles to pass.
