Departure to Colon by train at 7.15am. Portobelo is located on the Atlantic Coast in a large and beautiful Bay which had capacity for as many as one hundred galleons. The City was once surrounded by fortifications formed by the Castles of San Felipe, San Fernando, Santiago of the Glory and San Jeronimo. These castles were demolished by the English pirates Henry Morgan and Vernon in 1688 and 1740, and were rebuilt in 1760. Portobelo was once a very important part of the defense, and commercial systems for the Spanish Empire in America.
